I’m going to teach how to crochet your very own Merry Grinchmas Blanket! It’s Candy Canes and Gingerbread meet The Grinch. It’s basically Whoville in a blanket. The design is classic: The Grinch, Candy Canes, and Gingerbread…I can’t think of anything more “Christmas” than what happened with this blanket. Stitch Abbreviations
- Ch – chain
- DC – Double Crochet
- Fsc – Foundation Single Crochet (I suggest YouTube if you are not familiar with this technique)
- Sc – Single Crochet
- Sk – Skip
- Slst – Slip Stitch
Important Notes
- Gauge: 4 Cluster Stitches X 8 Rows in a 4” swatch
- Color changes: I use the magic knot for all of my color changes which leaves me with almost zero ends. I suggest using this method! Either way you need to change colors during your last stitch of every row so that you are starting each cluster or ch 3 in your new color for your next row. If you choose not to use the magic knot method and would rather weave in ends and are not familiar with how to change colors, you can check out this video: How to change colors in double crochet.
- The Ch 3 in this pattern counts as a DC

Pattern
Row 1 – Red: Fsc 160 sts (or ch 161 and sc 160 down the chain). Turn your work.
Row 2 – White: Ch 3, 2 DC in the first st, *sk 2, 3 DC in the next st* Repeat to end. Turn your work.
Row 3 – Red: Ch 3, *3 DC in the space between your DC clusters from your previous row* Repeat to end. After you make your 3 DC in your last space, place 1 DC into the top of your Ch 3 from your previous row. Turn your work.
Row 4 – White: Ch 3, 2 DC in the first space between your ch 3 and your first DC cluster, *3 DC in the next space between your DC clusters from the previous row* Repeat to end. 3 DC in the space between your previous 3 DC cluster and your ch 3 from the previous row. Turn your work.
From this point forward, all odd rows will repeat Row 3 and all even rows will repeat Row 4. I will list only the colors for each row.
Row 5: Red
Row 6: White
Rows 7 – 10: Lime
Rows 11 – 13: Dark Green
Row 14: Red
Rows 15 – 16: White
Rows 17 – 19: Brown
Rows 20 – 21: White
Row 22: Red
Rows 23 – 25: Dark Green
Rows 26 – 29: Lime
Row 30: White
Row 31: Red
Row 32: White
Row 33: Red
Row 34: White
Repeat Rows 7 – 34 three more times.
In Red: When you have finished all your repeats, Ch 1, sc into each st across. Do not turn cut your yarn. Turn your work. Move on to the border directions.
Twisted Candy Cane Border

Continuing with red, ch 6. Pull up a long loop and remove your hook.
Attach your white yarn to the next st. ch 6, pull up a long loop and remove your hook.
Attach your brown yarn to the next st. ch 6, pull up a long loop and remove your hook.
Attach your lime yarn to the next st. ch 6. Pull up a long loop and remove your hook.
Attach your dark green yarn to the next st. Ch 6. Pull up a long loop and remove your hook.
Insert your hook back into the red loop. Making sure that all your other chains are to the back and that your red chain is in front of the other 4 chains, slst your red chain to the next st after your dark green. Ch 6, pull up a long loop and remove your hook.
Repeat this step with each next color until you have 5 sts left to work. When working your last 5 sts, you will slst as usual, but you will not ch 6. You will need to fasten off and cut your yarn each time, leaving a long tail to weave in. Repeat these steps for your other border edge.
